Wal-Mart, Target Think Small As They Grow As Grocers

Wal-Mart, Target Think Small As They Grow As Grocers

They renamed it Big Value Supermarket. At first, Canciani and Jones built Big Values reputation as a store to go to for great meats at low prices. Zappula said. Sometimes chains look at property that is close to their competitors as a way of hedging them off. We know where our customers are coming from. The store looks to partner with some other anchor stores, but DAmour-Dailey said that sometimes its not always possible to find space for them. This is New England, so the site selection can sometimes be limited, DAmour-Dailey said. In 1968, Ron Canciani and his partner Link Jones bought a small store from Al Peske in Bantam. He said it is closer to his house than stop and shop is and will continue to shop at the Big Value.I did the math, it is about 2 miles closer than Stop and Shop and you dont have to fight the traffic in New Milford, Lidback said. One such customer is George Lidback from New Milford, who made the trip because it is closer from his home than Stop and Shop.I used to shop at Stop and Shop, but I had heard about how good the Big Value was in Bantam and decided to give it a chance, Lidback said.Lidback said he comes to Bantam to sometimes get pizza from a local pizza place and always noticed the grocery store. And the Torrington residents we spoke to said location is most important to them when they go grocery shopping.Ponte believes that a trend among larger stores is to build near each other as a way to increase competition.Burger King and McDonalds sometimes build right next to each other, said Rose Ponte, Torringtons economic development director. At the peak of their meat business, they ran the second highest volume meat department in Connecticut for an independent store. Penney and restaurants, and leaving downtown without a traditional supermarket. But Stop & Shop says it is committed to keeping the downtown location, and it invested in a renovation of the store unveiled with a grand re-opening May 21.Stop & Shop has done research that shows that they can support two stores in the city of Torrington, Howard Cannon, a spokesperson for the company, said. Josephs family lives and works in the Hartford communities that the shops serve. This unique arrangement will allow for family members to be in the store every day, and will allow them to respond to customer needs and questions. The new store will also offer area residents a wide selection of quality products and services at Shop Rites traditional low prices. We dont want to have all of our farmers grow the same thing, so we talk to them as early as we can. When Shaws left Connecticut, ending a 15-year run in the state, it opened the market even further to non-traditional food stores like Whole Foods as well as Walmart and Target.Shaws owner, SuperValu Inc. He says the store has its loyal customers, but is always looking for more traffic, and weekly sales are a driving factor. We do have sales to compete with the larger stores, but we also realize that its hard to go toe-to-toe with a 60,000 square foot store, Dwan said. In addition to a broad array of groceries and fresh produce, the store will have several services that ShopRite customers have come to expect, including: a fresh bake shop featuring Old World artisan breads and donuts made the old fashioned way from scratch every day. When you have these grocery stores build right next to each other, or even across the street, the competition between them sometimes heats up.Christina Veiders, managing editor for the trade magazine Supermarket News, said stores look at many different aspects of a site before they decide to take any action.Site selection can be determined by any number of things, Veiders said. The store also provides a clean, friendly place to shop, something that Marandino believes isnt always the case at larger stores. Our philosophy here is to do everything the right way, from customer service to proving the best quality food, Marandino said.Marandino also said that he does not like to see customers waiting in line at his store. There will also be a full-service butcher shop; fresh seafood delivered seven days a week; a full-service floral department; a prepared foods department featuring hot foods, grilled entrees, a Mediterranean olive bar and an in-store sushi chef; as well as an extensive selection of natural and organic products in every department.Beyond LocationWhile the convenience of a grocery stores location in proximity to the home or workplace of a shopper appears to be paramount with most Torrington area residents, others choose a store based on unique aspects to the business.Price Chopper sets itself apart in Torrington by staying open 24 hours a day, allowing for that 1 a.m. The Big Y in Plainville is located across the street from several large stores, such as Kohls, Dicks Sporting Goods and Lowes.Others arent as lucky to have another anchor near them or next to them. We make everything here and having the knowledge that our cutters have is important.Dwan also says having a friendly staff and a convenient location along with a clean store keeps his customers coming back. Stores in Avon and East Windsor are built next to Walmart stores. of Minneapolis, sold off 11 of its stores in Connecticut to Shop Rite and Price Rite. After being open for nearly 40 years, Big Value suffered a setback when the stores roof collapsed in September of 2008.We had a major blow to the store, and the repair allowed us to renovate from the older building, Canciani said. According to a Shop Rite press release, The store has undergone a complete renovation to bring the community a state-of-the-art supermarket with some of the industrys most sustainable technologies, including energy efficient lighting, a storewide recycling and composting program and shopping baskets made from recycled materials. My family and I are thrilled to return to our New England roots with the opening of the Shop Rites of Canton and West Hartford, Chuck Joseph, owner of Shop Rite in Canton and West Hartford, said. He says this is one thing that makes his store different.I have a meat cutter here who has been in the business for over 30 years, Dwan said. The remaining stores were purchased by Stop & Shop. As long as we are near active shopping zones and not dead zones, we are happy. The Torrington Big Y is located in the same plaza as a new Lowes store, and many other area Big Ys have the same luck of finding another large anchor store to build near. Since I am around the west end of the town more often, I shop at the old Stop & Shop. grocery store trip that fits some folks schedules better and allows you to avoid the crowds.Price Rite offers a wider selection of ethnic foods, and along with the smaller Aldi, discount prices significantly on a number of items by offering a no-frills atmosphere in which you have to bring your own bags or pay for them, and also pay if you want to use a shopping cart. Some of the other stores in the area also make it nice to come up this way too.Lidback also said the lines and people in the larger stores also make it hard to shop at some of the larger stores. A lot of the larger chains dont want to pay their help for these departments because being a meat cutter is a skill, and with that comes a higher rate of pay.Dwan said the chain stores typically buy most of their meat already packaged and dont cut and make ground meat on site. The Plainville store, while near larger stores, also is near a Dress Barn.Any time you see a company the size of Shaws leave an area, you will definitely see a shift in customers, DAmour-Dailey said. Stores like Walmart take a lot of the market share, and are expanding to sell more groceries, and at the same time, stores like Stop & Shop, Big Y and Price Chopper are growing in Connecticut. The obvious strategy of a Walmart and Target is to capture more of the overall spending of customers who are already walking through the doors to buy discounted clothing, toys or electronics. We view our products as being priced competitively with most of the other stores in the area, Michael Davidson, manager at Target in Torrington, said. Shop Rites tradition of low prices and exceptional customer service, coupled with our personal connection to the local community, positions us well to compete in this market, particularly at a time when customers are looking for quality and value. They are confident they will attract new customers, too.I live on the west end of town, so having the Stop & Shop on High Street is nice, Marianne Marola said. While the store doesnt do anything special to combat larger stores opening a Stop & Shop is located in Winsted and a Ship Rite just opened in Canton – the store is aware of the competitors. We are definitely aware of newer, larger stores opening in the area, store owner Peter Marandino said. When they open, though, I kind of think of it as stepping in a puddle. The Marandinos have had a store in the family for even longer, going back to 1947 and started in Bloomfield. The store is located on Route 44 and prides itself is offering excellent perishable food items such as meat and produce. The Naugatuck Big Y is a stand-alone store, but is located near a CVS and Auto Zone store. And next door to Wal-Mart, Price Chopper sets itself apart by being the only Torrington supermarket to stay open 24 hours.Grocery competitors in Northwest Connecticut can be divided into four categories the traditional full-scale, full-service supermarkets, which include Stop & Shop, Price Chopper, Big Y and Shop Rite; big box discount department store retailers with grocery sections, including WamMart and Target; discount grocery chains such as Price Rite and Aldi; and smaller, independent neighborhood grocery stores such as Marandinos in New Hartford, Super Saver IGA in Winsted and Big Value IGA in Bantam.Stop & Shops new store and renovation of its existing store on High Street in Torrington are the latest in some major investments in our local grocery store war.Walmart has renovated its store on East Main Street to make a vastly expanded grocery section a centerpiece.Target opened just a few years ago in the next shopping plaza up on East Main Street with a grocery section included.Big Y unveiled a major expansion and renovation in space adjacent to its old store on Winsted Road last year. And Shop Rite has taken over and renovated the relatively new-to-begin-with space at the Shoppes at Farmington Valley in Canton that was abandoned when Shaws Supermarkets pulled out of Connecticut earlier this year. Some in Torrington feared that plans for a new Stop & Shop on East Main Street was the latest in a big box shopping trend that has pulled shoppers away from downtown Torrington, and that the chain would close its High Street location, endangering the viability of a plaza that also includes J.C. What we do here isnt magical, we really on what we do well.Clash of the TitansClaire DAmour-Dailey, vice president of corporate communications for Big Y Supermarkets said there is a difference in sales and advertising when it comes to a competitor moving in.Since they already had a store in town, it is easy to see where the shopper might come from, DAmour-Dailey said. Owning the store and keeping it local provides us with a greater knowledge of our customers.Other stores that might be affected by larger stores include Big Value IGA of Bantam. We have a pleasant store and very personable employees.Shoppers come from all over to visit Big Value. He said sometimes the larger stores get jammed up and that Big Value offers wider aisles and a better store layout. In New Hartford, Marandinos has served customers for over 40 years. People know that if they want to get really high quality meat and personal service, they will go to Jimmys. In Winsted, John Dwan owns and operates the Winsted Super Saver IGA and says that specializing in certain items helped him carve out a niche and allows the store to combat larger chain stores. Our store specializes in the meat and deli business, Dwan said. I like the new overhaul they just completed, though. Certain locations can be better than that of their competitors.Chains will also study neighborhoods to see where there customers are going to come from, Veiders said. We usually meet or beat Stop & Shop prices and we are confident we will continue to do so.CLICKHEREfor related story:Walmart cutting prices at Torrington store, adding groceries.Locally Owned Stores Find a NichePonte believes that the smallest food stores in Torrington wont have to deal with a lot of competition from the larger stores.Places like Jimmys Store wont really suffer from the larger stores because they have developed their own niche, Ponte said. I would still come here to this location because I usually wont be up on the east side.Marola said that if she is looking for a few items or needs a good cut of meat, she will go to a place like Jimmys Store, or another smaller store.I shop where it is convenient for me, T.J. They are up for grabs, so we definitely try to grab as many new customers as we can.DAmour-Dailey also said the store likes to purchase food that is grown locally by area farmers. We contact the farmers in January and talk to them about what crops they intend to grow that year, DAmour-Dailey said. The store looks nice.Having two locations in the city will allow the company to be more convenient for shoppers. The total project cost about $1 million. We compare well with the larger stores in the area, manager Stephen Canciani said. In larger stores, customers often have to wait in line for extended periods of time before the check out.It is a mortal sin waiting in line, Marandino said. Sometimes we are lucky to build near other large stores, and sometimes it works out to be smaller ones. We look aggressively at their advertising and sales and try to compete with sales.DAmour-Dailey said the effort starts at the store level saying, We have a fabulous staff, and we continue to look at shopping patterns for all of our stores. We have always offered our customers great meat products and great customer service.Canciani believes his stores customer service is what sets them apart from some larger stores. We always get compliments from our customers that say how good our service is. Shaws continues to operate stores in the other 5 New England states. The former Canton Shaws location was picked up by Shop Rite, and opened for business on May 26. TORRINGTON The opening of a new Stop & Shop on East Main Street Friday is the latest in an intensifying battle for grocery customers in the Torrington area.Stop & Shops move is bold in that this is its second full-scale supermarket in Torrington, a rare move for a city its size.Across the street, Walmart has overhauled its store to add a major new grocery section. We dont always have the choice of who we build near. After a while, everything settles back down and the great service you might get when the store opens returns to what the norm is.Marandino said his store focuses on providing great customer service to go along with great food.
