But FICO, which had $605 million in revenue last year, is not directly regulated by any government agency and its credit rating formulas are secret. Despite a name that vaguely sounds like it must be federal something-or-other, FICO actually stands for Fair Isaac Corp., a Minneapolis company that creates proprietary mathematical algorithms used to calculate consumer credit scores.

and Experian Plcthe three major credit bureausvacuum up information on customers payment histories with banks, retailers, credit cards, utility companies, landlords, mortgage loans, student loans, phone bills, and even parking tickets.Think of it this way: If credit scores were chili, FICO would write various recipes then sell them to the credit bureaus, which gather the raw ingredients themselves. TransUnion Corp., Equifax Inc.

We support the CFPBs study of credit scores and believe it will inevitably conclude that consumers are best served by focusing less on the different types of consumer credit scores available, and more on the underlying document that is used to generate a scorethe credit reportand how it can be an empowering tool for consumers, Experian said in a statement.

FICO is trying to build the best predictive model they can, said Tom Quinn, FICOs former vice president of scoring who now works for the consumer education website Credit.com. They let the data tell them whats fair.. If the data predicts a different pattern, between people with different kinds of debt, then that would be picked up eventually.

According to Hoovers Inc., a clearinghouse for company profiles and industry information, the newest FICO formula reduces penalties for multiple accounts and is more lenient on occasional late payments, which don’t necessarily indicate a poor credit risk. Additionally, authorized credit card users (such as teenagers on a parent’s account) no longer benefit from activities of the account owners, which prevents artificial score inflation..

Another concern of consumer groups: Credit bureaus have little, if any, financial incentive to treat consumers fairly. That means the customer for the credit bureaus is the creditor, not the consumer, critics say. Before extending credit to a consumer, an auto dealer or a landlord buys the customers credit score from one of the three big credit bureaus to assess the risk of default.

If a company like FICO were to reveal the coding for the model, then [consumers] could potentially use that to manipulate their score for short-term benefit The creditor will lose confidence in the tool and ultimately raise the cost of credit for everyone.. There are years and years and years of intellectual property that have been built into these scores and [companies] should have a right to have that protected, Quinn said.

Since early 2004, Americans were allowed to recover their credit reports from each of the rating agencies once every twelve months for free. We obtained this right by FACTA, which is operating correctly and accurately credit the 2003 Act. Methods (web, mail, phone) in order to claim our free credit reports can be found at http:// www.annualcreditreport.com/ site.

According to the Consumers Association of Industry Data (CDIA), the trade organization of credit collection agencies, but about 175 million credit reports have been requested since the beginning of 2004 until late 2010 , an average of € 25 million per year. At first glance looks like a big number, but when it breaks soon realize that this is only a small percentage of those who could benefit. Follow my math.

The requirement for free credit report FACTA has been in years forseven place now. This means that 4.2 billion credit reports may enjoy free since the law took effect. 175,000,000 4.16% $ 4.2 billion. An easier way to understand the distribution percentage is 25 million euros (outdoor year) of 600 million ..

In 2004, the average was higher than the application from one ocean to another state free credit report. California and other West Coast states had the first right and right throughout the year, the report is free. This year seems to have been written in almost annualcreditreport.com daily.Unfortunately cover almost dead except a few mentions here and there.

If you have a TV, then you've seen the ads for free credit reports and results. band of squirrels, Ben Stein, and badly so, I think I can see everything related to credit. All these companies mentioned in the airways and Internet ads for free credit reports and scores: FREEcreditreport.com, FREEcreditscore.com, FREETripleScore.com, FREEscore.com … none of them are free, but they all have the word "free" in their areas and advertising. And, paradoxically, the legitimate website to claim their free annual credit reports do not have the word "free" in the field ..

Do not get me wrong. This is not the fault of the credit bureaus. This is not your job to stick a credit report in your pocket when you are not looking. The law requires them to be more reactive than proactive. It is for us to ask our reports are not just doing a good job of it.

I think most of them back to the "free" of it. Not much cool.2 likesReply. If you're not careful when cehcking your credit, you are charged nothing. 9 out of 10 times, I think I pay for something as simple as watching a LLA. Do not make it easy.

And I think the idea of changing the url in a annualcreditreport. The Governor actually solve some problems. Excellent points Jim and Brian. But this does not solve the problem of people not knowing that we have free credit reports to claim and where to get them.

I think the best way to distinguish between "free" and "no load" is that if the site asks for a credit card number. Annualcreditreport.com not require a credit card number so it is impossible to pay. All of these other sites I mentioned in my room needs a credit card as number.1.

There is a difference between a credit report and * a * * * free credit score? In the past I have been able to use annualcreditreport.com for a free report, but if I remember correctly, did not score. and therefore not very useful. Am I wrong here / missing something? 3 likesReply.

As long as we’re getting better and better, which we evidently are, I think we should see what becomes – predictions are for those who are either no hopers or see not quite hacking it. There were Arsenal rants of ‘you won’t get into the CL proper’, ‘you’ll go out in the first phase’, ‘welcome and goodbye to the CL’ when we were 4-0 down to Inter and loads of other bits of negative. 68. Let’s see what becomes. At 4:26pm on 27 Dec 2010, ordiokid:I don’t think we have to think about the possible woes of next season yet, ordiokid. When Spurs were playing Berne in the CL and went 3-0 down on their plastic pitch, there were so many Gooner doom-mongers on 606 and then as 6 went in at the other end over the next game and a half, ‘it all went quiet over there’.

I Love this blog it is written really well , kudos to you Phil,Van De Vaart is an amazing addition to our squad and I think we have plenty more to see from him in the coming years, yes I think that Lennon has lost his confidence this year but im not worried as I know how good he is and it will take time and maybe van de vaart can bring out his full potential. No doubt that VdV was the bargain of the century and he is worht than some players who were sold for 25mill! I am scared that he wont be playing as good as he is now in the coming months and that 1 small bad run can ruin his career he is also very injury prone and gets injured a lot also he has a dodgy knee which is part of the reason he has a cheap price tag, I actually saw the funniest van de vaart video on this webpage lets hope he doesnt do something like that with us its a video on this page scoring a crazy own goal Van De Vaart VideoAnyway after tonights result (arsenal vs chelsea)I cant see anyone but UTD winning the premier league title.

Ignoring Bale for a moment, (because I think everyone knew he was always going to be good), and it remains to be seen whether his recent form (and significantly fitness), is something that he can continue longer term.Corluka is a very steady right back, (better at defending than going forward), but in a position that i might suggest is the weakest across the voard in the Premiership, I wouldn’t swap our 2 for anyone else’s, (and don’t even joke about Glen Johnson please).Kaboul was sold to Portsmouth as a player who seemed to have the technical skills, but would play too much football in the wrong areas and would too often go AWOL at just the wrong time. While he can certainly still be a threat going forward, he is FAR more consistant and has filled in across the back 4 and even holding in midfield, (at a push). That’s not the player that I see playing for Spurs this year and last.Lennon has always had potential, but while I liked him, he was too inconsistant and too often anonymous away from home. Just give him some money to buy Given, (or another decent GK), a bik hulking centre-back, and a top powerful striker and I think they will run anyone close, (as they are already almost doing).Chelsea are struggling. Whatever has gone on at Spurs behind the scenes has worked wonders with JJ. He is unrecognisable from the player that we sold to Portsmouth.Bassong seems to be a decent squad player and more than adequate, (just as long as he has a dominant partner, (read King or Dawson or Galas), beside him to lead. Hutton has beena revelation this season after coming in for Corluka. To see him suddenly willing to just attack with such poise and determination was a bit of a shock to the system for me, (as I though he was little more than a bit-part player). Now seemingly, in a team with other players to fill the creative, flair roles, he has been able to get back to basics and just graft, graft and graft some more to become once again an important member of the squad, (especially in the absence of Thud). These are the lesser-lights in the squad. I think it is decent planning by Levy and Spurs’ strategy in the transfer market since the current owners took over has been nothing short of life-changing when you think back to the ageing has-beens and fancy flair players that Spurs were so often accustomed to signing.I’m really not a fan of Gallas for example, but at 0.00 he is an amazing bit of business and where that French chip was prominantly seen on his shoulder at Arsenal, we have hardly heard a peep out of him at Spurs, (and I would suggest that the first time we do see the chip then Harry might teach him what Wenger never managed).I look at the Spurs team and I see coached improvement all over the pitch. The back-room team of Joe Jordan, Kevin Bond, Clive Allen, Tim Sherwood, Sir Les,(and sorry I can’t remember who the GK coach is), have improved players all over the pitch.Look at the full-backs Assou-Ekotto and Hutton. I’m a Spurs fan so straight off the bat I am obviously delighted with the signing of VdV.I must admit though, that although there is no doubting his quality, I had heard previous murmerings about his temperament and he looked more than a little “lardy” during the first part of the season. I think he is a vastly improved player, (certainly playing with good players helps), but I really think he is being coached better now.Huddlestone looks leaner than I have ever seen him, (I never thought he would make the grade at the top level but now I see him developing very nicely). Abramovic seems to have had his eye turned by the Russki 2016 bid and getting rid of Butch has been an big blunder. Well know he works his socks off when not in posession and seems gradually to be getting over his confidence and fitness issues. It has been a clear and distinct change in direction in terms of signing players and we are really starting to reap the benefits now.Are we gonna win the Premiership of the Champions League? Probably not.But that fact that we are even in with a shout and that it is being discussed shows the measure of our progress under Harry.Man Utd have hardly broken sweat so far and are still unbeaten with Rooney still to find 3rd gear and having coped with injury issues at the back. Jenas Jenas Jenas. Completely over-reliant on Tevez and as he doesn’t often get injured that isn’t really a but if you stop him then generally speaking you stop Man City.Despite the money, I see Man Utd and Arsenal dominating and Spurs being the most likely to kick on of the other 3, (with Man City possibly losing out). It’s good fun being a Spurs fan at the moment.:). They are not the big names but they are names that have played many games and important roles all the same. I think the credit for this has to go to the back-room team at Spurs and also for the likes of Comoli and Levy and whoever has been doing the recruiting over the last 5 or so years. When he is good he is absolute quality, but you have to wait another 6 weeks for his next good one and when he wasn;t good he was very bad. There is no foubt that THud was always going to be good, but I think he is going to be a better player than I expected.Jenas. Drogba seems to have fitness issues, JT has long had them, (lost of injuries possibly linked to back problems), and Fat Frank a real loss for the first time in what seems like his career, (did he never get injured before?) Far too few centre-backs in that squad, Ferreira must be among the poorest players in the Premierhsip and how many games must Kalou and Mikel play before someone just decides that they are not good enough and never will be?Man City will give us more of the same, (more excellent performances, more losing 1-0 and drawing 0-0 in games that they completely dominated and a fair bit of mud-slinging and in-fighting to boot). I honestly hoped that I would never see him in a Spurs shirt again. I think that Utd will go on to win the league by a coinsiderable margin.Arsenal seem to have upped it a little in terms of physical ability to compete with the likes of Chelsea, (tonights game I think was significant in that respect), and any calls by unhappy Gooners for Wengers head just made me laugh. A-E still gives me kittens on occasion with his cross-firld passing but when he is hot he is VERY hot and is a vastly improved player compared to say 2 seasons ago where we seemed very weak on the left. Harry in fact commented on that himself and mentioned that he was not in good shape, (partly due to not having a proper pre-season after World Cup exploits, and partly because of not featuring much before that in Spain). What I liked though was that he has a bit of nastyness in him, (and everyone has known that Spurs were a soft touch for a long time). Although he was one of few bright sparks in a Newcastle team that got relegated, he still did get relegated. He looks unrecognisable from the selfish, flash, “look at me player”, that I had come to really not enjoy watching at all. He’s not the only one who can “battle” now though and after decades of watching decent Spurs teams be bullied, it is refreshing to see that we no longer fall away when push literally comes to shove.8M is absolutely a snip for VdV, there is no doubt about that, but it’s not a case of being lucky at all. He seems to have a renewed hunger and a completely differnt mind-set and just a phenomenal attitude now.

We all know what the credit reporting agencies will allow consumers to do. Theyll let you either purchase your credit reports or claim freebies periodically because of state and Federal law. Theyll let you place fraud alerts on your files if you feel like you may have been exposed to identity theft. And theyll even let you place a short statement on your credit report if you want to explain your side of the story vis–vis an item you dont agree with..

You might ask, Why would I want to do such a thing anyway? The answer is quite simple: because your traditional credit files do not contain a record of all of your payment obligations. Think of things like apartment or home rental payments, utility payments, gym membership payments, or any other reoccurring obligations you pay on time each and every month. Youre not getting credit for that credit. Ive even had people argue that they view tithing as an obligation, yet they get no credit report credit for it. Who am I to argue with them?.

This one is very similar to the one above. You are not allowed, as a non data furnisher, to report the payment activity of other people who either owe you money or otherwise make payments to you each month. Think about people who are your roommates or tenants in rental properties. It would be great to report them to the credit bureaus each month as either making their payments on time or not.

The reason youre not going to be allowed to do so is because youre simply too small, a one-man shop, so to speak. The credit bureaus dont want to fuss with a landlord who wants to report one or two rental obligations to them each month. Theyre set up as a volume shop, meaning they want large volume of reporting each month. And frankly, theyre doing you a favor by not accepting your accounts. Why? Because the minute you report something on a credit file you become covered by the Fair Credit reporting Act and its 84 pages of rules, regulations and obligations. Trust me, youre not interested in dealing with that mess..

The credit reporting agencies will not grant you access to their databases to pull credit reports on people other than yourself unless you have a darn good legal reason for doing so –and even then they may simply choose to not do business with you. Nobody has the right to pull credit reports: its a privilege that they guard closely. Again, if you own a home and want to rent out a room or have a rental property, you should check credit reports prior to turning over the keys. But, the credit bureaus dont see value to you buying one or two credit reports a year. And, I cant disagree with them.

Some have even argued that couples should be allowed to pull each others credit reports and scores before getting too seriously involved. And, again, I cant disagree. Regardless, those credit reports wont come directly from the bureaus. Youre going to have to have that difficult conversation on your own sans credit reports..

Your alternative: there are tenant-screening companies who will pull and resell to you a potential tenant’s credit report. The cost is not terribly excessive, $20-$50 each, and that cost is generally absorbed or subsidized by the potential tenant as part of their application fee. You can also certainly request that the tenant buy their own credit reports and hand them over..

This topic is a lightning rod. Many, if not most people do not like how the credit bureaus are able to collect, maintain, score, and sell your data without your permission. The reason is simple: its your data regardless of how you want to slice the argument. You have the mortgage with Chase. You have the credit card with Wells Fargo. You have the auto loan with Citibank. The lenders didnt force those loans on you. You chose to do businessand chose to do business with them. The accounts are yours..

If only you could see what I can see, youd realize that the credit bureaus find themselves on the wrong side of FCRA and credit damage lawsuits hundreds of times each year. The trust just isnt there. The comments to this article I wrote not long ago arent atypical consumer opinions of the credit reporting industry.. There is also a long history of credit file inaccuracies and, frankly, credit bureau negligence.

You simply dont have the authority to command the bureaus to stop collecting your data and selling it. There is nothing in any Federal or state statute that gives us the right to do so. In fact, a lot of the data that bureaus maintain in files outside of their credit report databases is unregulated. That means anyone can buy it for any reason, and they can sell it to me regardless of how you feel about it..
